Thank you for volunteering to help out with Social Media in an upcoming Pixel Perfect Event. If you think of a speedrun marathon as a sandwich, the runners, hosts and tech volunteers make up the sandwich, it's the social media team's job to encourage people to eat it. Social media is an essential tool for informing people about the marathon and to encourage our runners to share in the excitement. You'll assist the team by coming up with ideas for posts and grabbing clips during the event.
Aside from the Twitch channel where our events are streamed, Pixel Perfect posts notifications and content to:
Twitter - https://www.twitter.com/pixelperfecttv
Nope, not gonna stop calling it Twitter. Twitter is our primary public-facing means of communication and promotion. In the lead-up to and during events, we post to highlight every run.
BlueSky - https://bsky.app/profile/pixelperfectevents.bsky.social
Anything we post on Twitter also gets posted on BlueSky, which tends to have a much more focused speedrunning community.
YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/@pixelperfectevents
All runs are recorded and uploaded to our YouTube channel. In addition, we also post clips from the stream as Shorts.
Starting from the Monday before the event, we post a dedicated social media post for each run on Twitter and BlueSky. These are roughly separated to have the same number of posts each day and posted in schedule order, with the final run being posted the day before the event. Each post should be humourous/engaging and at least include:
Game name
Runner’s Twitter handle (or Twitch link if they don't use the platform)
Link to the run on the Oengus schedule
These details can all be found in the Socials sheet of the PPM# Full Schedule Google Sheet you'll have been linked to on Discord.
Ahead of the event, and especially during the week building up to it, come up with ideas and post them in the #ppmx-social Discord channel. Be creative with them and find a suitable GIF to go with it. The GIF doesn't necessarily have to be from the game itself. Twitter and Discord both use very similar GIF libraries, so feel free to use Discord's library when sharing. You can also find GIFs on Google and post them in Discord, or if you're super creative, you could even make your own!
The Social Media head will check the posts to ensure they're suitable, react with a thumbs up if it's good to go, and schedule the post on Twitter and BlueSky. Each game only needs one post, so if a game has already received a confirmed post, don't make a second one for it. Check the pins in #ppmx-social to see which games are outstanding.
Similarly, every game will also need a run live announcement - a post that goes out roughly five minutes before a run is due to start. These are scheduled ahead of the event but can be edited on the fly should the need arise. These posts should be a lot more to the point, highlighting that the run is now live and should at least include:
Game name & category
Runner’s Twitter handle (or Twitch link if they don't use the platform)
Link to the stream: https://twitch.tv/pixelperfectevents
These posts are also accompanied with their marathon run graphic. Don't worry about providing these graphics, the Social Media head will handle this. However, as with the Pre-Event posts, you should help come up with the wording for these and post your ideas in the #ppmx-social Discord channel. We won't start producing these until all of the Pre-Event posts have been drafted.
